3 Kinds Of Pharmacies

There are different kinds of pharmacies. There is some overlap in between what the pharmacies handle, but even with that overlap, the different kinds of pharmacies will take care of their own things.

General Pharmacy

A general pharmacy is the most common kind of pharmacy. When you go to this pharmacy, you can get most of your prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, beauty products, and other convenience items. The general pharmacy may carry some durable medical goods, like canes or walkers, but in general, they don't have a large selection.

Durable Medical Goods Pharmacy

These pharmacies specialize in various kinds of durable medical goods. Those things include lift chairs, braces, assistive devices for the bathroom, and wheelchairs. If your doctor writes you a prescription for one of those things, then this would be the pharmacy that you would go to. If the pharmacy doesn't have the item in stock, they can measure or fit you for the device and then order it for you. Generally, a durable medical goods pharmacy will only cover durable medical goods, but occasionally they will also have some specialty medication services.

Compounding Pharmacy

A compounding pharmacy falls into an interesting category. They can be part of a general pharmacy if the pharmacy has a compounding pharmacist on staff. But, they can also be a standalone pharmacy where all the pharmacists have taken the extra training in order to compound medications. Compounding medications means that the pharmacist is taking the medications and either mixing them from the ingredients or adding in things to them. For example, one thing that could be added is flavoring so that kids will be more likely to take the medication. That flavoring could also be added to medication to help pets take their meds as well.

A compounding pharmacist could also create creams, ointments, or lotions. If you have a particular skin issue, your doctor may prescribe a lotion for you, and you would have to take it to a compounding pharmacy so that they can make it for you. Compounding pharmacies can also cover specialty or rare medications. Some chemotherapy medications need to be compounded before they can be used.

There are several kinds of pharmacies. While there may be some overlap in between what each pharmacy will carry, if you have a particular need, you should go to the kind of pharmacy that handles the kinds of objects you are in need of.
